The kick off week for Healthy Air Living has ended and the Commute Green in the San Joaquin Challenge showed itself to be an exciting competition between valley employers. There were 23 participating organizations that competed in this year’s challenge in addition to the Air District which was not in competition but participated.

Representing those 24 organizations was a total of 17,583 employees. During the week there were a reported 6,766 alternate commutes: 592 utilizing transit; 5,152 utilizing carpools and vanpools; and 1,022 utilizing zero emission alternatives such as bicycles, electric vehicles, or telecommuting.

Now the real challenge begins, making these commute alternatives a part of our every day lives. Making a change in the way we commute is a way to make a healthy air choice, and be a part of the solution to bring clean air to the valley. When we breathe cleaner, we live better – that’s the point of Healthy Air Living!

This year’s winning organizations for Commute Green in the San Joaquin are:
  • Small Organizations: Insight Environmental Consultants (Team name: Insiters) 
  • Medium Organizations: Jeffrey/Scott Advertising (Team name: Team JSA)  
  • Large Organizations: Community Recycling (Team name: The Recyclers )  
Honorable mention also goes to Fresno County for the largest single day participation with 945 employees utilizing alternative commuting on Thursday, July 10th.
